Kindergarden in the crossfire

Mexico currently lives a vicious mafia war in which the cartels are fighting for the drug smuggling routes to the United States. Civilian, police, army and mafia are among the casualties and as paranoia and fear reign supreme we can still see acts of bravery by the civilian population caught in the crossfire. In this case it was in a Kindergarden in the outskirts of Monterrey.
This past Friday kindergarden teacher Martha Ivette Rivera Alanís recorded with her cellphone her class in the moment when a mafia commando fired at taxi drivers which allegedly served as spies for another mafia in Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
In the youtube video we can see how she keept her cool and managed calm the kinder gardeners by singing a popular Barney the dinosaur song during the shooting. In the video she tells the children to stay on the floor and that its all going to be ok, that they are safe there. Soon after she starts singing along with the kids while the gunshots continue outside. watch the video
Drug consumption in the United States as well as corruption in Mexico have allowed the situation to escalate to this levels where even kindergardeners face the violence of this mafia wars. The violence between the mafias is no longer limited to them, the civilian population is often caught in the crossfire and innocents perish. The brutality of the cartels is unprecedented and people in Mexico are now learning ti live with this violence and insecurity.
In this circumstances it is at least comforting to see that when faced with danger some people rise to the occasion and act heroically, indeed Bravo! for people like this kinder garden teacher, but lets face it… civilians should not be left to their face their luck unprotected by the government as it is happening now in Mexico…
